Dental Crowns – All that You Need to Know

Dental crowns are a type of dental restoration that covers the entire visible aspect of a tooth that needs to be repaired, thereby becoming the tooth’s new outer surface. These tooth-shaped crowns are cemented into place in order to encase the tooth, making them very difficult to dislodge. Dental crowns are also known as dental caps or tooth caps.

At our Surrey dental practice, Derna Dental, we offer dental crowns for a variety of reasons. They include restoring a tooth to its original shape, strengthening a tooth, and improving the cosmetic appearance of a tooth since they provide a tooth with a hard outer surface that resembles a regular tooth in strength. We routinely make dental crowns for teeth that have broken or that are worn down excessively. We also offer these crowns when large portions of the teeth are destroyed by tooth decay. Sometimes a tooth that has a very large filling requires a crown because it is no longer strong enough to perform its usual function. These crowns are also used to cover teeth that are very badly discolored.

We offer dental crowns made of porcelain, metal, or a combination of both depending on the nature of the problem and which one will suit your teeth and specific problem in the best manner possible. At Derna Dental, we believe that dental crowns should only be used to improve the cosmetic appearance of a tooth if it is also necessary for any other purpose such as restoring or strengthening the same tooth. This is because a dentist will need to file down the tooth to make room for the crown, thereby making this an irreversible process. In fact, we always recommend using an all-metal crown for molars because less of the tooth needs to be removed since these crowns tend to be thinner than the other types.

We have plenty of experience in making dental crowns to remedy all sorts of dental problems. The crowns that we make usually last at least ten years. In many cases they last much longer, up to 30 years or so. Of course, this depends on how well the tooth is maintained and whether it is used in the correct manner.

The process of making crowns is very simple. We first make an impression of the tooth with a rubber-like material that sets in approximately five minutes, after which it is removed from the mouth. We will also take an impression of the teeth above or below the tooth that will receive the crown. This is to make sure that the crown will fit into your normal bite. The crown is then made according to these impressions. We will place a temporary crown made of plastic until the actual crown is ready.
